“Mozart’s Birthplace” (German: Mozarts Geburtshaus or Hagenauerhaus) was the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. At No. 9 Getreidegasse in Salzburg, it hosts now a museum about the life of the Austrian composer. Mozart himself was born here on 27 January 1756. He was the seventh child of Leopold Mozart, a musician of the Salzburg Royal Chamber. The Mozart family resided on the third floor from 1747 to 1773. Mozart’s Birthplace is one of Salzburg’s main tourist attraction and certainly a ‘must see’ on your city tour. Mozart’s apartment has been reconstructed as accurately as possible with details from everyday life and 18th century furniture. Here Mozart discovered his passion and talent for music.
The Salzburg Card includes entry to the city’s top attractions, including Mozart’s Birthplace, the Hohensalzburg Fortress, and a tour of the Stiegl Brewery. It’s valid for 24, 48, or 72 hours and also includes access to public transport in the city. It is worth it.
The museum is small and it gets really busy so try to visit it early in the morning (to avoid the tour group arrive) or visit it an hour before the closing time. Keep in mind that a visit to Mozart’s Birthplace requires about an hour. Mozart’s Birthplace offers a special family program called KlangKarton for children, teenagers, and the young at heart. As part of the program, you should watch out for concerts, music workshops, and special guided tours designed to educate and entertain.
