Burj Khalifa, Dubai

The Burj Khalifa in the morning, Dubai

The Burj Khalifa is the tallest skyscraper in the world. The needle-shaped building is 2716 feet high (828 metres) and has 200 stories (163 habitable floors). The tower has 57 lifts, weighs 500,000 tonnes, and is covered in 28,601 glass panels. The tower is home to offices, private apartments, bars, restaurants, a hotel (with its own spa and several restaurants), a swimming pool and gym complex, and its public observation decks. It was was designed to look like a hymenocallis, a beautiful desert flower typical of the United Arab Emirates. It is also a good shape for reducing wind resistance and making sure that people inside the tower get the best possible views from most parts of the building.  The architects tested their building designs in wind tunnels to make sure they were safe.  You might hear the building creak slightly during extremely high winds, but it is totally safe.

The visiting time of the tower is on average an hour and a half but it also depends on the type of ticket  purchased. At certain times the observation decks are more crowded and expensive so you have to choose the option that suits you best.

Sunset is the most common and suggestive time to visit the Burj Khalifa. For a cheaper ticket and fewer visitors, book a ticket in the morning or after dark.

How did the construction of Burj Khalifa impact Dubai's environment?

The construction of Burj Khalifa was a monumental project that certainly impacted Dubai’s environment in several ways. On the positive side, it catalyzed numerous urban infrastructure upgrades around the downtown area. However, the construction process itself involved vast amounts of materials such as steel, concrete, and glass which had large carbon footprints. The high water usage for construction and ongoing maintenance of the skyscraper is also significant, considering Dubai’s arid environment. Nevertheless, the Burj Khalifa incorporates various energy-saving features and water-efficient systems, reflecting an awareness of sustainable building practices.

Are there any sustainability measures implemented in Burj Khalifa?

Yes, sustainability was a key consideration in the development of Burj Khalifa. Despite its luxury and height, the building incorporates several environmental features:

  • Water conservation systems: The building’s condensation collection system pulls moisture from the air to use for landscaping irrigation, safely saving about 15 million gallons of water annually.
  • Energy-efficient lighting: Many of the lights inside Burj Khalifa are LEDs or other energy-efficient models to reduce energy consumption.
  • Ice storage for air conditioning: An advanced system is used to create ice during off-peak hours which is then used to cool the building.
  • Waste reduction strategy: The building uses sustainable waste disposal and recycling programs to manage waste generated by its occupants and visitors.

These measures have set a precedent for sustainable practices in high-rise buildings.

Is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai worth visiting?

The Burj Khalifa stands as a marvel of modern engineering, piercing the skyline of Dubai with its awe-inspiring height. As the tallest building in the world, it certainly draws attention and merits a visit for those captivated by architectural feats. However, its allure might not resonate with everyone.

For tourists seeking unique experiences, the viewing decks offer panoramic views of Dubai’s cityscape, which are especially stunning during sunset. Yet, the experience can feel overshadowed by high entrance fees and the potential crowds, particularly during peak tourist seasons. These factors can diminish the personal enjoyment and make the visit feel less exclusive.

For those questioning the value of visiting the Burj Khalifa, considering alternate attractions might be beneficial. Nearby, the Dubai Fountain and the Dubai Mall offer more inclusive experiences with their vast array of entertainment and shopping options, which might appeal to a broader audience.
