Vienna is the capital and the largest city of Austria . It is known as the “City of Music“, as many famous classical musicians such as Mozart and Beethoven lived there. Vienna is also said to be the “City of Dreams” because it was home to the world’s first psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud.
But the city is not just palaces, museums and culture. Almost half of its surface is occupied by green spaces (more than any other European capital). The Donau (Danube) divides the city into two districts and the Wienerwald (Viennese Wood), already a source of inspiration for Beethoven delimts the western districts. Vienna is also an ideal destination for those who love the outdoor life: the extensive vineyards that surround it make it one the largest wine city in the world.

The city is located in the eastern part of Austria and is close to the borders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.
When was Vienna founded?
The city was founded around 500 B.C.E. and originally it was a Celtic settlement. In 15 B.C.E. Vienna became a Roman frontier city guarding the Roman Empire against Germanic tribes to the north.

Events
The summer season boasts an enviable program of musical events, more varied than one might expect. The Haydn Days, the Welttone (event dedicated to World Music) and the Spring Festival follow one another between March and May. Summer is divided between the Donauinsel rock (late June) and the Summer Music Festival (July-September). Not to mention the “classic among the classics”, the famous New Year’s Concert in the halls of the Musikverein.
Parks and gardens
Don’t miss a nice walk in the large Prater park under the well-known giant wheel. The city can be very hot in summer and therefore has splenty of public outdoor swimming pools and even beaches along the banks of the Danube. The long Donauinsel (the island on the Danube) in the summer welcomes skates and bicycles, trampolines, surfers and water slides. Under the shadow of the Donauturm, the Donaupark is another green lug of the city: in a bend of the Danube you can even learn to sail. For bicycle lovers, on the other hand, hundreds of kilometers of mostly flat cycle paths are available.
Excursions
Otto Wagner’s Jugendstil masterpiece, the charming Kirche am Steinhof is located just outside the city in the area of the psychiatric hospital. Also recommended is an excursion to the Wienerwald (“Viennese wood”), the vast area planted with vineyards that surrounds Vienna.
